Eisenhower State Office Building - KDOT and KRGC
Before the formation of the Green Team, there was limited paper, magazine, newsprint, aluminum, and cardboard recycling available in the Eisenhower State Office Building (ESOB). While recycling for these materials did exist, the lack of convenience was a major obstacle. Another obstacle was a lack of awareness as to what could be recycled and where. The team, charged with increasing recycling rates, promoting waste reduction, and encouraging the purchase of environmentally responsible products, has made great strides in increasing the recycling efforts at ESOB. The janitorial contractor handles all of the recycling except aluminum, which is collected by building volunteers with proceeds donated to local charities and non-profit organizations. The campaign includes periodic emails, posters, and presentations promoting recycling, waste reduction, and environmentally responsible purchasing facts and tips.
show lessPaper-recycling is captured in offices and consolidated into large containers located on each floor. We have recently started recycling mixed plastic and magazines with collection containers for each material located in the elevator lobbies on each floor. Aluminum can recycling containers are generally located within the desiginated break areas throughout the building.
KDOT has been recycling paper and aluminum cans for many years in our headquarters and district offices. We also recycle metals, batteries, antifreeze, used motor oil, and other items in our field offices. Recently, we have added plastics and magazines to the list of materials that we are recycling.
