Fort Hays State University
Fort Hays State University has had a campus-wide recycling program since 1995. Our University has adopted a “point-source generation” policy for consumer goods and a “collection point” for all other recyclables. Because of our location, removed from major recycling markets, we have teamed with the city of Hays to increase efficiency and reduce transportation costs. Our “mixed paper” recycling program has marketed 897.2 tons since 1998. The ratio of recycled paper to municipal waste is 19.3% (2004-2007). The balance of our consumer recyclables (aluminum cans and plastics) are operated by campus service organizations as fundraising projects and monitored by the Physical Plant. The University’s “collection point” recyclables and annual averages are as follows: Waste Oil (KDHE approved vendor) 850 gallons/year Refrigerants (Montreal protocol) 400 lbs/year Silver flake 5 lbs/year Batteries (Nicad/Pb/acid) 2 tons/year Scrap metal 9 tons/year Yard waste (Hays compost site) 3 tons/year E-Recyclables (2004-2007) 3,000 lbs/year Fort Hays State University’s future plans include: • Pilot program for plastics • Increased student involvement in Clean/Green program • Marketing of recyclable products

In 1995, FHSU started Pilot and Recycling Programs. Further information about these programs is available at: www.fhsu.edu/physicalplant/recycling.shtml.
