Go For The Green Topeka Correctional Facility

We are a state correctional facility operated by the Kansas Department of Corrections. Although our recycling efforts have been “sporadic at best” for several years, the recent establishment of a Green Team rekindled and provided structure to our initiative. Our recycling efforts include the collection and sorting of cardboard, shredded paper, and plastic in conjunction with the Shawnee County Recycling program. Containers and pickup for the recycled materials are provided by Shawnee County. Inmates play a valuable role in our recycling program and are utilized in moving the material to be recycled to a staging area for proper sorting before it is placed in the appropriate storage container to await pick-up. The recycling of aluminum cans has been and continues to be a project undertaken by various inmate organizations and self-help groups as fund raisers for these organizations.
